Picking a Photographer: should you just go with the friend who has a good camera?

Hi Moms, Seniors, Brides, Grooms, and others who need a photographer,

My name is Sarah Kobunski and I started this photography business 5 years ago.
I really love helping people see their beauty. Yes, you are beautiful.

I also love helping people get what they really want. That's why I named the business, Desired Focus. I also chose the logo of an infinity sign because I want people to always remember the beautiful moments and people that are most important to them.

Before I let you know a little bit about me and a common trend in choosing a photographer, look at some beautiful images in these apps I created for clients:

Wedding

Engagement Session

Family Session

Senior Session

You may have noticed the same trend I see when it comes to hiring a photographer.

People have way better cameras than they used to. Some know how to actually use them too! (In fact, I actually teach people how to use their cameras in photography workshops and personalized photography lessons!)

Maybe you are one of those people that bought a $500+ camera.

I want to first say, I'm actually in favor of better equipment and cheaper cameras. (I know $500 isn't spare change). I'm in favor of people capturing fun and beautiful memories of amazing moments in their lives.

Why would I want to deprive a mom of the ability to look at a picture 20 years from now of their baby's first steps? Why would I want someone to have ugly pictures of their friends goofing off at Prom?

You want to know why I wanted to become a photographer? It's because I loved photography even when I had a cheap camera and horrible pictures. (I had no concept of composition or how to use it!) I just couldn't imagine not being able to take pictures.

I started learning how to use a camera because I loved being artistic. Even though I could draw, I hated that I couldn't always spend time with people while creating it. That was boring to me. At least with a camera, I could interact and be with people. It was satisfying for me. (I was amazed by my sisters' and brothers' artistic talent with painting, drawing, and lego structures! I wanted to find my niche.)

There are a ton of people with cameras out there wanting to help you get pictures of your family, wedding, or Senior pics and you may actually get some images from them that you absolutely love and will cherish forever. You may really consider this because these enthusiasts will consider doing it for free or pizza or $50! (Or me..when I first started around 15 years ago, the cost of film. And no, my cousin did not enjoy my blurry pictures, even though some turned out.) You may also end up missing moments you've dreamed about because they didn't understand how to use their camera. You may end up getting boring shots and missing the heart and beauty of the moment.

I'm writing this because I want you to find someone who has the knowledge how to use their camera and will take your vision and accomplish it. Find someone who will create art when they capture your moments.

After the pictures are taken, will this friend work on making the pictures better? Do they actually know how to enhance images or will they look worse? Will they give you a timeline of when you'll get them back or will it be one of the last things they get to in their busy life? Will you even see the images after they are taken? I remember when I first started editing images, 1. I was amazed that a little enhancement goes a long way, and 2. It takes up a lot of time to learn.

Look at my work, does it already match what you want? Do you want professional prints and professional courtesy?

When you hire me, you are hiring me to:
*Listen to you
*Have a relaxed session
*Make your images look as beautiful as possible
*Quickly access your images or prints

If you'd like to book a session, please give me a call at 740.297.4955 or email me at sarah@desiredfocus.com to set up a time that works best for your schedule. I usually schedule sessions week days and evenings, but will consider Sunday on occasion. I like to reserve Saturdays for Weddings and Photography workshops and classes. I will occasionally have Saturday evenings free, so please ask if you want one.

I like to meet people at a location they love and I offer unlimited outfit changes and number of people in the pictures. The sessions are usually about an hour. The travel fee is included in the photo session or wedding within 100 miles of Zanesville, Ohio.

Jeremy and Kassidy' Wedding

When I first met Kassidy and Jeremy, I thought, "Perfect, they want creative and fun images!"

But it is so nice when couples turn out better than expected!

They deliberately carved hours out of their Wedding day to enjoy together!
(This gave us, me: Sarah Kobunski and Rachel Gieseke, the ability to take hundreds more casual, creative and fun pictures for them to enjoy later too!)

And because they hired Desired Focus Photography to show up to take pictures of the preparation and not just the ceremony, they got several detail shots of the items in their wedding too! Here are a few of the shots Rachel and I took:

Before I show you the incredible images of Jeremy and Kassidy enjoying their day, I just wanted to write, I loved their style! They chose Florafinos to create their stunning flower bouquets. They chose colors that complimented everything and they created a winter landscape!

They had many traditional and very meaningful moments during their ceremony and reception, but I loved how they made their wedding day unique by throwing out a superstitious element. They got to spend more time together because they had a "First Look." That's when the bride and the groom will spend a moment seeing each other for the first time on their Wedding day.

They invited their friends and family to this moment too. Kassidy stood at the altar, while she waited for Jeremy to see her in her gown for the first time.

Rachel Gieseke, captured this moment so beautifully! I love the tears in Jeremy's eyes!
One of the values at Desired Focus Photography is helping clients get exactly what they want!
It really makes the pictures more meaningful too! Rachel and I loved spending the day shooting pictures of their glances and excitement!

I feel incredibly happy for Jeremy and Kassidy as I post these images. The smile just won't come off my face as I view the admiration in Kassidy's eyes and Jeremy's sweet embraces.

In addition to these warm glances, I love the soft warm lighting on the wall.

See the little specks of white stuff in the picture above? That is snow! Kassidy created a beautiful winter themed wedding. Kassidy prayed for it and we got it! We shivered...oh, my...I can't believe how brave Kassidy is! We huddled together like penguins while we waited for part of the Bridal party to show up!

It's a good thing Kassidy had this shawl to keep her a little warmer!

The ceremony was unlike any that I attended.
Jeremy's father began the service.
Then after Kassidy's father walked her down the aisle and gave her away, he married them!
The ceremony required serious commitment and focus.
I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to finally say, "I know pronounce you man and wife."
